Compliance feels like something you handle once and move past. Get the documents right, get the letter, get back to the mission. But the obligations that come with exemption don't expire. Where the Lines Run

Some of the areas where exempt status is won or lost:

• Annual filings — The organization has to report to the government every year. • Private benefit and inurement — This is the bright line. A nonprofit's resources exist to serve its mission, not to enrich the people who run it. When earnings find their way to insiders — through sweetheart deals, inflated pay, or favors dressed up as transactions — the organization has crossed the line the exemption is built around. This is the one the silent partner cares about most, and it's the one good intentions don't excuse.
• Executive compensation — Paying people fairly is allowed and expected. Overpaying insiders is where trouble starts. Compensation has to be reasonable for the work and the organization, and it has to be set through a real process and documented as such. "It seemed reasonable to us" is not the standard. What you can show is.
• Political activity and lobbying — A 501(c)(3) lives under real limits on what it can do in the political arena. Some advocacy is fine. Crossing into campaign activity is not. The boundaries are easy to wander across without noticing, especially in an election year when everyone has opinions and the mission feels urgent.
• Income outside the mission — A nonprofit can earn money. But income from activities unrelated to the mission can be taxable, and too much of it raises a louder question about what the organization has actually become. Earning is fine. Forgetting which earnings belong to the mission is not.
• Staying who you said you were — Underneath all of it is the same question. The organization told the government what it exists to do. Is it still doing that? Mission can evolve. But an organization that has quietly become something other than what it was granted permission to be has a compliance problem, whether or not anyone has noticed yet.
